Southern Voice to explore Second Generation issues of South-South Cooperation
(12-13 October 2015)

South-South Cooperation (SSC) has been identified as a potential source of development inputs for the implementation of the post-2015 international development agenda. Triangular cooperation (Trc), in which traditional donor countries and multilateral organisations facilitate South-South initiatives, is also being promoted in this regard. This aspiration has been underpinned by the emergence of the Global South as a major actor in, inter alia international trade, investment, finance and knowledge transfer.

In view of the ‘coming of age’ of the notion of SSC along with Trc, and taking note of the emerging demands on its account, Southern Voice on Post-MDG International Development Goals seeks to revisit the ideas and practices of these forms of development cooperation. This will be done to explore the ‘second generation’ issues pertaining to the revealed experience in the area of SSC to date.

To design the research approach on the concerned themes and issues, Southern Voice is organising a set of brainstorming sessions on 12-13 October 2015 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania captioned ‘Methodology Meeting for Research on South-South and Triangular Cooperation’.

Concretely, the sessions will focus on the following aspects:

  • The state of research on South-South Cooperation and the emerging trends;
  • Review of analytical and quantitative techniques deployed in research on South-South and Triangular Cooperation;
  • Data Challenges for research on South-South Cooperation;
  • Leading issues on Triangular cooperation;
  • Identification of themes in line with the objectives of the research.

Towards an Effective Southern Voice Network

The discussion will provide background for the drafting of a Strategy Document of Southern Voice in the coming days.
