The United Nations Foundation and Southern Voice and Club de Madrid have the pleasure to invite you to a high-level event on the sidelines of the High-level Political Forum (HLPF). We will gather to discuss progress on the 2030 Agenda as explored in Southern Voice’s State of the SDGs research initiative.

This conceptually-innovative and policy-focused empirical exercise unpacks some of the critical relationships underpinning the 2030 Agenda. The aim is to identify those who are “left behind” within diverse contextual realities, reveal the complex relationship of trade-offs and synergies among specific goals of the 2030 Agenda and to explore the global governance-related factors affecting country implementation.

The initial research phase of the initiative produced six country case studies conducted in Ghana, Nigeria, India, Sri Lanka, Peru and Bolivia. At this event, the authors of each of the six studies will present analysis and recommendations to improve the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research is grounded in individual country realities and intends to kick-off the discussion on 2030 Agenda progress.

The empirical evidence coming out of the country case studies exposes a set of common experiences that string together diverse and unique results. These findings demonstrate that the SDGs demand a common though individualized approach at the country level. Considering these conclusions, this roundtable will seek to answer two recurring questions intrinsic to the success of the 2030 Agenda:

  1. How do global systemic issues impact the Agenda’s implementation at the national level?
  2. How do synergies and trade-offs of the different goals and targets play out in practice?

Through this exercise and based on ground-level realities, Southern Voice hopes to move away from the traditional SDGs discourse to a more rigorous discussion on the relatively understated issues of SDG delivery.

This closed-door discussion will provide an opportunity to bring together thought leaders, advocates, and decision makers tracking and contributing to the implementation of the SDGs. We will encourage a frank and open discussion under Chatham House Rules. The aim is to encourage mutual learning that can guide the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the years to come. Event conclusions will be valuable inputs for the State of the SDGs Global Report, to be released this September at the SDGs Summit.

Please note that this is an invitation-only event. We will make an effort to make room for those interested in joining and contributing to the discussion. If you would like to join please let us know by writing to secretariat@southernvoice.org
