Care is essential to produce the ties between people and life in society. Yet, the monetary value of the resources that families require to produce enough quality care remains unknown, as well as what they need to avoid putting women’s autonomy at risk.

Understanding with precision that is needed to provide an adequate level of care to individuals is essential to harness and direct the necessary resources to the sectors and individuals responsible for care. It is to this end that Southern Voice and its member CIPPEC (Argentina) are developing a new synthetic indicator for care needs: the Basic Care Basket (BCB).

First proposed in 2021, the BCB is now in its pilot year. Ahead of this phase, this event seeks to gather critical feedback from key stakeholders.

The speakers are:

  • Dr Rose Ngugi, Chair of Southern Voice. She will be giving the welcoming remarks for the session.
  • Valentina Zendejas, Technical Secretary, Global Alliance for Care. She will be providing the welcoming remarks along side Rose Ngugi.
  • Vanesa D’Alessandre, CIPPEC(Argentina). She will present and introduce the basic care basket to the audience on the impact of lockdowns and new safety nets on poverty rates in the Golden Triangle.
  • Alejandra Vargas Garcia, Senior Program Specialist at IDRC will be providing the closing remarks for this session.
