Care is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of sustainable development. Yet across the Global South, care work (both paid and unpaid) remains overwhelmingly shouldered by women and girls, reinforcing gender inequality and limiting their autonomy. As demand for care grows due to ageing populations, climate change, and health trends, existing systems and infrastructure are failing to keep up. The care crisis is deeply interconnected with the climate emergency, which intensifies care needs, disrupts services, and often shifts additional unpaid care work onto women.

This side event brings together feminist movements, economists, and care practitioners to present bold policy proposals for financing care systems as a development strategy. Drawing on collaborative work at CSW69, this Global South-led coalition will outline concrete solutions to place care at the heart of economic planning—advancing gender equality, strengthening resilience, and informing the agenda for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development.
