COVID-19 has had devastating effects on vulnerable communities and put social welfare systems that were already stretched thin under even more distress.

On the occasion of the 2021 DevRes conference, on June 14 – 16, a panel of researchers will discuss their findings on the impact of the pandemic on poverty and vulnerable groups, as well as the efficiency of response and recovery policies. All of them took part in a Southern Voice research initiative.

The panelists are:

  • Khondaker Golam Moazzem, Research Director, CPD (Bangladesh). He will share insights from the work done in partnership with IPS (Sri Lanka) to help both countries’ apparel sectors recover from the crisis and protect their workers.
  • Lanta Daniel, Researcher, STIPRO (Tanzania). She will discuss the differences in impact between two fishing communities working around Lake Victoria, one in Tanzania, one in Uganda.
  • Maynor Cabrera, CEQ Institute (USA). He will present findings from a study conducted with FUSADES (El Salvador) on the impact of lockdowns and new safety nets on poverty rates in the Golden Triangle.
