Southern Voice is pleased to announce it has joined the “Fighting Food Crises along the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) Nexus Coalition.” This alliance emerged from the United Nations Food Systems Summit in September 2021, in response to the alarming rise in global hunger since 2015, primarily driven by violent conflict and climate change. The coalition aims to end hunger by promoting peace and harnessing the potential of sustainable food systems to enhance prospects for peace.

The HDP Nexus Coalition, co-chaired by the g7+, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Food Programme (WFP), brings together over 65 committed members. Supported by a Secretariat funded by the European Union and hosted by the Global Network Against Food Crises, the coalition supports member states affected by food crises and conflict in implementing their National Food Systems Transformation Pathways.

Southern Voice’s involvement in the coalition aligns with its mission to address knowledge asymmetry and participation deficits in global development dialogues. By joining, we will contribute to the coalition’s three key dimensions:

  1. Supporting National Food System Pathways in Fragile Contexts: Leveraging its network of 70 think tanks from Africa, Latin America & Caribbean, and Asia, Southern Voice will help support nationally-led food systems transformation processes
  2. Advocating for Conflict Resolution and Peace: Southern Voice will play a crucial role in highlighting the impact of conflict in global policy discussions, ensuring the voices of the most vulnerable are heard
  3. Promoting a Common Understanding of Food Crises Drivers: By applying HDP nexus approaches, Southern Voice will help address the interlinked drivers of food crises, particularly emphasising the often-overlooked peace element

Joining this coalition advances Southern Voice’s vision to realign power between countries, in this case in the field of food security.
