Southern Voice is pleased to announce that it has nominated two groundbreaking environmental projects from the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP)-India for the prestigious Earthshot Prize. Prince William and Sir Richard Attenborough launched the prize in November 2020.

CSTEP has submissions for two of the five Earthshots:

The proposal for Earthshot “Clean our Air” is an algorithm. It uses satellite data to map the distribution of air pollutants in a region. The information generated can be mapped to identify pollution hotspots with greater accuracy than stationary equipment currently deployed to measure air pollution. Using statistical and artificial-intelligence-based models can predict pollution levels and put in place practical steps to reduce pollution’s impact on populations. This knowledge can be generated at 10% of current methods’ costs and in a considerably shorter time.

“The two proposals we are putting forward have successfully been tested in India, are low cost, and easy to replicate across the Global South”, says Jai Asundi, Executive Director of CSTEP-India.

The second bid is applicable for both the “Clean our Air” Earthshot, as well as for “Fix our Climate“. It is a web tool that puts information about rooftop solar potential, technology, and investments, in the hands of individual building owners. It empowers them to take control of green electricity generation at home. This information, which CSTEP provides at no cost, is replicable in cities with strong solar irradiance across the globe.

Southern Voice is honoured to have been invited to become a Nominator for the Prize. “The Earthshot Prize selected our network for its ability to identify the most impactful solutions across all sectors in the Global South. We are confident that CSTEP’s environmental solutions will be strong contenders for the Prize”, says Andrea Ordóñez, Southern Voice Director.

The jury will include various high-profile global figures, such as Queen Rania of Jordan, Australian actress Cate Blanchett, British naturalist David Attenborough and the Colombian singer Shakira. The winners will be announced at the end of 2021.
