New Demands of Development Effectiveness in the Context of COVID-19: Country Perspectives from Asia, Africa and Latin America

Southern Voice and the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Dhaka organized three virtual expert group meetings to discuss the new demands of Development Effectiveness in the context of COVID-19.

The meetings were designed to examine, from a Southern perspective, the implications of COVID-19 on the effectiveness of international development cooperation.

Perspectives shared during the discussion will feed into the narrative of an upcoming study, which will address whether the international community’s responses to the pandemic are suited to the needs of Southern recipients. This study will follow up on Southern Voice’s 2020 report: “Rethinking Development Effectiveness: Perspectives from the Global South”, which made the case for centring the perspectives of Southern stakeholders.

Following a brief introduction by Southern Voice Chair and CPD Distinguished Fellow, Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya there was a short kick-off presentation by Sarah Sabin Khan, Senior Research Associate, CPD.

Issues addressed in the meeting included external finance flows, governance and agenda, political economy issues and underlying contextual factors, assessment and impact, and outlook for effectiveness, among others. Contributions made during the meeting will be acknowledged in the final study.
