Rethinking UN Leadership: A Global South Perspective captures a growing tension within today’s multilateral system: many across the Global South continue to see the United Nations as necessary, while confidence in how power operates within the institution weakens.

Based on responses from civil society actors, researchers, and policy experts across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the report examines concerns surrounding unequal influence, concentration of power, weak political authority, and limited Global South influence in global decision-making. At the same time, it reflects continued support for international cooperation and growing expectations for a United Nations that is more representative, credible, and politically balanced ahead of the next Secretary-General selection process.

As a member of the Steering Committee of the 1 for 8 Billion campaign, Southern Voice joins broader efforts calling for a more transparent, inclusive, and politically credible process to select the next UN Secretary-General.
